Preparing for H1N1 as a Parent or Respite Provider

Flu season.jpg

The news is full of information about the H1N1 Flu Virus.  We want respite providers, in home workers and families to have a plan for this as it affects our services.  Of course, the first and primary issue is the health and well being of everyone.  We urge parents or respite providers to reschedule your respite time if you have the symptoms of the flu so that others are not exposed to the virus and become ill.  Seek your Doctor or clinic's guidance to know if it is H1N1 and get appropriate treatment.

· Talk with your doctor to decide about whether you or your child should have a Flu  vaccine.

· The best prevention is thorough hand washing with  soap and water.  When that is not possible, carry a container of antibacterial hand gel in your purse or car and use it.

· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

· Throw tissues away immediately

· If you don’t have a tissue cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve.

· Stay home if you are sick.  If you are a family please reschedule the respite or in home time so that the worker doesn’t get sick.  If you are a worker, let the family know as soon as possible that you need to reschedule.

· If there is a large outbreak of H1N1 in our area, respite providers should call the family before going to ensure that everyone is healthy and reschedule for a time when everyone is well.

· Check the web at Ontario.ca/flu for more information.
